His goal is to ensure students are effective in both real self-defense and sport environments. Throughout his 30 years of involvement in fight sports, he has trained at dozens of BJJ, Submission Wrestling, and Striking gyms. He specializes in analyzing fighters, predicting matchups, and approaches to winning fights.

Arthur J Raymond III

HEMA Instructor

Learning swordplay is like any other skill. It takes practice, discipline, and dedication. Modern equipment makes learning relatively safe, and a revival of interest in the old manuscripts makes learning easier than ever before. I always look for the why and how of the various methods to the schools of sword fighting. As we study more and more, each of us has to be mindful of the original core of each of these schools. They are meant to be a practical, efficient way to ensure victory for yourself, and minimize personal risk. That means constantly checking to see that our technique is not only correct to the manuscripts, but also functional. A solid foundation in the basics often beats poor mastery of advanced techniques.

Although we are unlikely to ever employ the techniques of HEMA in a life and death scenario, the benefits of learning the art can still shine through. Confidence, discipline, calm and rational evaluation of ourselves and our opponents, physical fitness, and good camaraderie are all part and parcel to being a skilled tactician. Learning HEMA is as much learning about yourself as it is the sword.

A Sambist at heart, Ryan believes that ‘ending the fight’ is the most important aspect in self-defense situations. He works tirelessly to ensure he understands the why, how, and theory of a technique and pressure tests it live to discover its effectiveness for him.

About Our

History

Glacier Combat Arts was built on the dedication and expertise of its founders, Ken Dunbar and Lindsay Berryman. Starting in 2008, Ken began teaching martial arts in his parents’ front yard, and over time, his passion for self-defense and martial arts instruction laid the foundation for Glacier Combat Arts. In 2021, Lindsay, a fellow martial artist and Army veteran, joined the team, bringing her expertise and love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Together, Ken and Lindsay lead with years of hands-on experience and a shared commitment to helping students grow.

Both veterans, Ken and Lindsay’s combined experience on and off the mat has shaped Glacier into what it is today—a place where discipline, hard work, and real-world skills are taught every day. Their passion for martial arts extends to the entire coaching team, who bring their diverse backgrounds in various disciplines to offer the highest level of instruction. At Glacier Combat Arts, every instructor is dedicated to developing the next generation of martial artists with a focus on building well-rounded, confident fighters.
